Okuyi Chandelier

The Okuyi Chandelier was inspired by the Okuyi ceremony practiced by the Bantu of Central Africa as a rite of passage marking major life events such as births, weddings, and funerals. Rattan matts formerly used for drying rice and beans were used to make the piece. The matts' natural color and the red and white pigments suggest the costume used in the Okuyi ceremony. The chandelier is about life; the matts were used to prepare and preserve food, the basis of life, and the colors and circular forms symbolize the continuity of life through the generations.
